Child dies after drowning in southeast Calgary stormwater pond

Update — August 02, 2026: A 35-year-old Mexican visitor died after jumping from a cliff into water at Nature's Hideaway Family Campground near De Winton on August 1 shortly before 12:30 p.m., with the body recovered by emergency crews with aerial support from Calgary Police Service's HAWKS unit. Additionally, a 33-year-old resident of Rocky View County drowned in Quarry Lake on the same day around 6 p.m. after disappearing into the water without a life jacket, with the body recovered by Canmore RCMP, Alberta Conservation Officers, and Canmore Fire and Emergency Services. Both bodies have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
A young child died after being pulled from a Calgary stormwater pond in critical, life-threatening condition on Sunday, July 12.
It happened around 1:20 p.m. at Legacy Small Pond in the southeast community of Legacy. Members of the Calgary Fire Department's water rescue team, along with Calgary police and paramedics, responded to the scene.
When first crews arrived, a family member had already pulled the child from the water. Despite CPR efforts by both fire crews and paramedics, the child did not survive.
"There was no transportation of the child, which means that it was called as a drowning fatality on scene," said Calgary Fire Department public information officer Alex Ky.
Police have not yet determined how the child ended up in the pond. The child's age and identity have not been released. According to the fire department, the child may have been in the water for up to 20 minutes before being pulled out.
