City responds to questions about seniors losing home services September 30

The City of Calgary has responded to questions raised about what happens when its Home Services for Seniors program ends on September 30, 2026, after the provincial government takes over responsibility for supporting low-income seniors.

The city confirmed that existing clients will continue receiving services coordinated by Calgary through September 30, and that it remains committed to supporting seniors throughout the transition. The city is working directly with current clients to help them understand their options and connect with available resources and supports.

Seniors will have the option to keep their current service providers or make arrangements with a new provider through the Government of Alberta's Seniors Needs Assistance (SNA) program, though the city did not specify how many of the 1,320 eligible seniors currently receiving free lawn care, snow shovelling, and housekeeping services will fall into an income gap and lose access to both city and provincial services after the transition.

On eligibility questions, the city directed seniors to contact the Government of Alberta directly at 1-877-644-9992, noting that Alberta determines eligibility for the SNA program.

The Home Services for Seniors team is available to answer questions, explain available resources, and connect seniors with the Government of Alberta.
