A visitor from India was targeted in a distraction theft on a northeast Calgary doorstep, in an incident that highlights a growing pattern of such crimes in the city.
Alka Lal stepped outside her son's home on a Saturday morning when a white car with three people pulled up. One woman spoke to her in her native language and asked for a hug. As Lal stepped closer, the group began touching her arms and bangles, and her necklace was slipped off without her noticing. The car sped away immediately.
Calgary police say distraction-based thefts rely on friendliness, surprise, and quick movements to catch victims off guard. Lal was not physically hurt but is now more cautious. Police remind residents that not every friendly interaction is safe and that it's okay to keep distance from strangers who approach unexpectedly. The investigation is ongoing.
