Calgary's first-ever hot dog festival launches this weekend, and the city's restaurant scene is diving in fully. Dog Days Festival runs Saturday, May 23 through June 6, featuring over 45 participating restaurants offering everything from ballpark classics to reimagined gourmet takes on the humble frank.

What makes this festival matter beyond the novelty: for every hot dog sold at a participating restaurant, $1 goes to Pet Access League Society (PALS), a non-profit providing pet therapy visits to facilities across Calgary. It's the kind of food event that satisfies appetite and conscience in one bite.

The kick-off party happens Saturday at Cold Garden Brewing between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., where The Dogfather's Cheesy Pawrito Hot Dog and Cold Garden's Pool Party Blonde special will each generate a $1 donation per sale. The brewery will host actual therapy dogs, giving the event a decidedly fuzzy atmosphere alongside the grilled meat.

The participating roster reads like a who's-who of Calgary's dining culture: from heavy hitters like Shake Shack and Palomino Smokehouse to neighbourhood players like Grumans Delicatessen, Two Pillars Brewery, and Letty. Alpine Sausage, Boogie's Burgers, Bretzelking, Born Brewing—the list spans every neighbourhood and cuisine type. Some spots are bringing their signature style to hot dogs; others are experimenting with creative interpretations.

Two weeks of hot dog focus might sound excessive until you realize how many ways a city can interpret a single food form. For Calgary, it's a chance to celebrate both institutional favourites and spots worth discovering.
