Downtown Summer Soccer & Basketball Clinics Launch June
City partners with Cavalry FC, Calgary Wild, and Calgary Surge for free summer recreation ahead of World Cup.
Calgary's downtown is about to become a sports hub this summer as the city rolls out free soccer and basketball clinics alongside World Cup celebrations that'll have the whole city cheering Canada.
Beginning June 2, the Surge City summer basketball series returns with three sessions per week—Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon at Century Gardens. Last year's pilot drew 1,100 registrants from 300 families across 58 sessions; registrations filled within 24 hours. This year, they've added a third session to meet demand. A three-on-three tournament will cap the series in September.
Meanwhile, Soccer City launches June 7 and runs most Sundays through September 2 (10 a.m. to noon) in Peace Park. The city partnered with Cavalry FC and Calgary Wild FC to stage free clinics for kids aged 8 to 17. Players and staff will be on-site—kids get access to their role models. "Representation matters," said Sarah Keilty-Dilling, Calgary Wild FC goalie, recalling her own childhood without female representation in pro soccer. "I didn't even know it was possible as a young girl to play sport professionally."
Canada's co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the U.S. and Mexico (June 11–July 19). While Toronto and Vancouver host matches, Calgary is hosting three World Cup watch parties at Eau Claire Plaza on June 12, 18, and 24. The Calgary Minor Soccer Association will set up a fun zone with a mini pit, one-on-one games, and a digital precision wall with leaderboard.
"Nothing brings people together more than sport," said Thom Mahler, the city's director of downtown strategy. "These programs boost foot traffic, support local businesses and help build a stronger, more resilient downtown." When sport, community, and summer converge downtown, everyone wins.
