Father charged with murder of two young children killed between Calgary and Revelstoke

A 38-year-old Calgary father has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his two young children, who investigators believe were killed somewhere between Calgary and Revelstoke, B.C.

On April 29 around 5 p.m., the man picked up his 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter for what was supposed to be a couple of hours during a scheduled visit. When the children were not returned, their mother called police. Officers attempted to contact the accused but were unsuccessful.

The next day, April 30, the man drove to Calgary Police Service's District 3 office on 14th Street N.W. and called 911, confessing to killing his children. Officers found both children's bodies in the back seat of his vehicle. A publication ban protects the identities of the children.

Prosecutor Carla MacPhail told the court that the Crown had filed updated documents specifying the killings occurred "at or near a location between Calgary and Revelstoke." Homicide unit Staff Sergeant Mark Rahn stated: "the accused contacted 911 and stated that he had killed his children."

At the time of the deaths, the children were visiting their father amid a separation. The accused and their mother had been in a six-year common-law relationship that ended in 2025, and the two parents shared custody. During their relationship, police attended their home four times, though no charges were ever laid following those attendances.

The accused remains in custody. A defence lawyer appeared in court on Thursday, with Clayton Rice's counsel indicating he needed time to consider his position on the matter. Rice declined to comment. The accused is scheduled to return to court next week.
