Flags emerge as rallying symbols ahead of Alberta separation referendum on October 19
As Albertans prepare to vote on separatism, the Canadian and Alberta flags have become focal points for federalists and separatists alike — and a source of tension.

With less than four weeks until Albertans vote on a separatism referendum on October 19, flags have become rallying points for both sides of the debate — and a source of neighbourhood tension.
The Canadian flag has emerged as the symbol of federalists making the case for the province to stay in Canada. The Alberta flag has become the symbol for independence.
Louise Lyons, who has lived in central Edmonton for close to 30 years, has flown a flag outside her home for roughly half that time. She switched from displaying a Canadian flag to an Alberta flag a couple of years ago, before the referendum was announced. Lyons is in favour of separation.
"We love Alberta. We're both born, bred Albertans and this is a fabulous place," she said. "I hate to say it, especially over the last 11 years with the Liberals, with Trudeau and Carney, I really feel that our country is not what it used to be. I am very concerned about where Canada is going right now."
Lyons said she became concerned about displaying the Alberta flag about a month ago — as the referendum debate intensified. She once took pride in the maple leaf but now feels disheartened by it. When asked if she was upset that some people were offended to see the Alberta flag as a symbol for separatism, Lyons said yes: "If you're a proud Albertan, you can fly a flag without being judged."
Keri Goad bought a Canadian flag more than a year ago to display outside her home. Goad supports Alberta staying in Canada. "I'm a proud Canadian above and beyond what province I live in. To me, the Canada flag brings a sense of peace," she said.
Goad wanted to reclaim the Canadian flag after it became a symbol for protesters during the 2022 trucker convoy. "After the convoy, you're like, 'oh, are they one of those convoy people that are against the Canadian government?' I had a really strong feeling that I wanted to reclaim the Canadian flag for the people who were proud to be Canadian, not the people wanting to fight the federal government."
Now, Goad feels apprehension when seeing the Alberta flag or Alberta logo. "They have a right to do that. But it does make me wary of that person," she said.
Lyons calls the fervour around flags "ridiculous."
