Four dead, four injured in wrong-way crash on Stoney Trail

Four people are dead and four others injured following a wrong-way collision that set vehicles ablaze late Sunday night on Stoney Trail in southwest Calgary.

Calary Fire responded just before 11 p.m. on August 3 to the three-vehicle crash on Tsuut'ina Trail SW. A vehicle was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes when it collided with multiple vehicles heading north. Firefighters arrived to find two of the three vehicles fully engulfed in flames.

"Crews immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack while simultaneously conducting rapid searches of the involved vehicles and providing emergency care to those who could be reached," the fire department said. Despite rapid first-responder action, four people were pronounced dead at the scene. Four additional patients were transported to hospital by Alberta Health Services for assessment and treatment. A secondary source confirmed one of the deceased was a child.

A large section of Stoney Trail was expected to remain closed for a prolonged period as Calgary Police investigate the crash.
