Four people, including a child, died in a head-on collision on Tsuut'ina Trail north of 90th Avenue S.W. late Sunday, with investigators now facing a complex task piecing together how the crash occurred.
Calgary police say a 2011 Mercedes-Benz, driven by a 30-year-old man with his wife and child as occupants, was travelling south in the northbound lanes. Police received a 911 call about a vehicle going in the wrong direction roughly two minutes before the collision. The Mercedes then struck an oncoming 2016 Subaru Impreza driven by a 43-year-old man. Both vehicles caught fire, and everyone in those two cars was killed in the crash.
A third vehicle driven by a 52-year-old woman then struck the Mercedes-Benz. Its driver and three youth passengers were taken to Foothills Medical Centre and Alberta Children's Hospital. One person suffered life-altering but non-life-threatening injuries.
Fire has complicated the investigation significantly. Kevin Charles, a retired RCMP officer and justice studies professor at Bow Valley College, said fire would have "destroyed or at least damaged a lot of potential evidence within that scene." The quality of evidence depends on how quickly Calgary Fire arrived and extinguished the blaze. Police have several investigative tools available, including CCTV footage, witness testimony, and technological advances to examine the two charred vehicles.
Calgary police have not yet released information about what caused the Mercedes to enter the wrong lane, or whether charges will be laid. The investigation remains ongoing.
