Two Tsawwassen First Nation elders died Wednesday morning when a vehicle struck four pedestrians in the parking lot outside Tsawwassen Mills near Delta, British Columbia. Two others were taken to hospital.

The collision occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. Delta Police Department arrived on scene at 11:30 a.m. The department said the driver may have had a medical emergency prior to the collision. Police stated there is no ongoing risk to public safety and that the incident is unrelated to a Truth and Reconciliation Walk taking place at Tsawwassen First Nation at the time.

Witness Rafael Saenz was 10 feet away when the vehicle struck the pedestrians. "I was literally 10 feet away from them. It was pretty traumatizing. I don't know how to describe it but I've never seen anything like that in my life," he said. "There were people crying next to them."

More than a dozen emergency vehicles responded to the scene, with multiple helicopters overhead. Paramedics performed CPR on some victims.

A Civil Emergency Alert classified the incident as critical and was issued shortly before 11 a.m. to Tsawwassen First Nation lands, stating: "An incident is currently in progress that has ended our Truth & Reconciliation event. Participants are asked to walk back the way we came and stay out of the area."

Tsawwassen First Nation confirmed the incident occurred during the Truth and Reconciliation Walk. In a statement, the nation said: "Out of respect for Tsawwassen First Nation families and ongoing response efforts, we will not be providing additional details at this time. Further information will be shared when appropriate. Tsawwassen First Nation extends its sincere gratitude to the Delta Police Department, emergency responders, and community members who assisted during the incident."

Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on social media: "To lose two beloved elders—in such a terrifying accident and on a day already so heavy with grief—is devastating. My thoughts are with the loved ones of those who died, those who were injured, and the entire community who are in grief and shock."
