Heritage Park, Calaway Park Open as Spring Snow Blankets City
Major seasonal attractions launch despite unseasonable May weather; Otafest also kicks off.
Heritage Park Historical Village and Calaway Park both opened their gates this past weekend to crowds braving unexpected spring snow—a reminder that Calgary's weather doesn't always cooperate with the official calendar.
The snow added an unexpected texture to opening-day festivities. Families and first-time visitors trudged through the white stuff at Heritage Park while setting up for the summer season of historic tours, heritage demonstrations, and vintage train rides. Calaway Park, the city's only amusement park, welcomed thrill-seekers despite the chill, with rides spinning against a backdrop of melting snow and clearing skies.
The same weekend saw Otafest—Calgary's Japanese anime and pop-culture festival—draw crowds downtown in downtown in its own opening-day snow. The festival, which celebrates anime, manga, cosplay, and Japanese culture, brought hundreds of costumed fans to the streets for panels, vendor booths, and celebration. Photos from the event show participants walking through flurries in full character costume, undeterred by the weather.
It's vintage Calgary spring: the season officially arrives, but Mother Nature delivers a curveball. By week's end, temperatures climbed back toward normal, and the snow became a minor footnote in opening-weekend stories. For the venues, it was a solid turnout despite the conditions—always a good sign for what should be a strong summer season ahead.
