Irish rider Daniel Coyle claimed a dominant two-win day at Spruce Meadows on Thursday, sweeping the top two positions in the 1.55-meter Recon Metal Cup and leading an Irish podium sweep.
Aboard his mare Farrel, Coyle posted a clear round in 38.63 seconds to take first place. He also finished second on Urville Z in 39.47 seconds, while Conor Swail rounded out the top three with Clonterm Obolensky. The event serves as a qualifier for Saturday's RBC Grand Prix of Canada, presented by Rolex.
Earlier Thursday, Coyle won the 1.5-meter Mercer Cup on Nord Face.
Coyle has become a fixture at the Spruce Meadows tournament circuit, which runs four major shows across the summer. "The horses can grow every week and you can jump a bigger class or a smaller class depending how your week is going," he said. "We plan to come every year."
What draws him back most is the venue itself. "Spruce Meadows is one of the best places in the world," Coyle said. "You come here for the four tournaments and you stay in one place, which we don't get to do much." For a touring international rider, that stability is rare — and valuable.
The National continues through the weekend at the south Calgary grounds.
