Kansas City Chiefs stadium design sparks Saddledome déjà vu among Calgarians

The Kansas City Chiefs' proposed new stadium has given Calgarians an unexpected jolt of recognition—and frustration. The NFL team unveiled design renderings Wednesday showing a domed structure with a sweeping roofline that bears striking visual similarity to the Scotiabank Saddledome, the city's most iconic sports venue.

The resemblance triggered immediate reaction online, with the Saddledome's official X account joining the conversation: "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

The Chiefs said the stadium, expected to open in 2031, is designed to honour Arrowhead Stadium's legacy while creating a modern 70,000-seat venue. But many Calgarians expressed bewilderment—and anger—that a comparable design was rejected for Calgary but embraced in Kansas City.

"It's weird," said Calgary resident and Chiefs fan Tienda Sorsdahl. "I think it's more funny that they don't want to keep that structure here, but they're building that structure there."

Longtime Flames fan Richard Ashton immediately spotted the connection. "It looks like a squished version of the Saddledome for sure," he said. Ashton also criticized the sea of surface parking surrounding the proposed Kansas City venue, noting that newer sports facilities are increasingly designed as entertainment districts with mixed-use amenities rather than sprawling lots. The Chiefs said the parking design prioritizes tailgating.

Concordia University economist Moshe Lander, also a Flames fan, expressed frustration with Calgary's demolition of the Saddledome without exploring similar innovative designs for a replacement arena. "If you can do it for a 50,000- or 60,000-seat stadium, you could have done it for an 18,000-seat arena," Lander said. "I'm furious. Calgary has really done a number on itself by removing something that would clearly identify the city."

Lander acknowledged the Saddledome is nearing the end of its operational life, but argued the city could have been more inventive. The design was not original to Calgary—it drew inspiration from the former Capital Centre in Washington, D.C., where the Capitals played in the 1970s and '80s.

Richard White, author of the Everyday Tourist blog and Calgary Herald columnist, said the online reaction was overblown. "I don't really know what all the fuss is about," he said. "To me, it just makes no difference." White said he doubts Kansas City's architects deliberately copied the Saddledome, noting that similar structural forms are not unique. He acknowledged sadness at the Saddledome's pending demolition given its connection to Calgary's Olympic history and Western identity, but said the timing of the Kansas City renderings amplified public reaction—coming just as the Saddledome prepares for its final NHL season before demolition.
