Long Island Rail Road workers strike, halting North America's busiest commuter rail

North America's largest commuter rail system came to a standstill Saturday after five unions representing roughly half of the Long Island Rail Road workforce went on strike. The two sides have been locked in negotiations, but talks broke down before workers took action. The shutdown affects hundreds of thousands of commuters in the New York City area.
