It will be at least August before Amanda Robyn Ahenakew learns if she'll be ordered to stand trial in the death of a 73-year-old security guard on Deerfoot Trail.

Ahenakew, 47, is charged with manslaughter in connection with the March 14, 2025 death of George Fernandez. Police said officers were called to the 900 block of 7th Avenue S.W. around 8 a.m. on March 13 after finding Fernandez in medical distress. He was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition and died the next day.

According to police, a woman entered the building to take packages from the lobby, and Fernandez intervened. During the altercation, Fernandez fell and hit his head.

At her two-day preliminary inquiry that concluded Monday, Justice Lloyd Robertson heard submissions from Crown prosecutor Jack Kelly. Defence lawyers Krysia Przepiorka and Erica Gouchie said they aren't prepared yet to argue whether there's sufficient evidence for committal to Court of King's Bench. They requested a return date of August 11, 2026, pending computer system confirmation.

Ahenakew was initially detained following her arrest but is currently free on bail under a condition she attend a treatment facility. She also faced a charge of break-and-enter to commit theft in connection with the same incident, but Kelly did not seek committal to stand trial on that allegation.
