A five-storey, 131-room Moxy hotel—Calgary's first—was unveiled Tuesday for development at 6th Avenue and Confluence Way S.E., occupying the last riverfront prime parcel in East Village and signalling renewed developer confidence in a neighbourhood that felt abandoned until recently.
The partnership between Truman and Marriott International positions Moxy, the company's lifestyle boutique brand, as a anchor for East Village's continued transformation. The hotel is a key component of the East Village Master Plan, which the city's Calgary Municipal Land Corporation created in 2007 to revitalize the neighbourhood and the broader Rivers District.
Kate Thompson, CMLC president and CEO, said: "This is the fourth development project to break ground in East Village in this year, and we're thrilled to see the development industry's renewed confidence in the East Village Master Plan and what's happening on this side of the city."
This marks a dramatic shift from the neighbourhood's recent stagnation. Jenn Machin, president of the East Village Neighbourhood Association, described the relief: "After what felt like a drought," she said. The lack of previous development had weighed heavily on residents. "The lack of previous development was concerning and we worried that developers and Calgary as a whole were not truly seeing the potential and, honestly, the amazing community that the East Village is," Machin said.
The neighbourhood's identity reflects its diversity. "Our community is shaped by people of all ages, backgrounds, identities, incomes and styles — each contributing to the whole. In many ways, East Village resists easy definition, and we take pride in that," Machin said. The area features award-winning architecture, historic buildings, riverside parks and spaces.
Tony Trutina, Truman COO, positioned Moxy as fitting the neighbourhood's character: it's designed "for travellers who want to get out, explore, meet people, and experience the city."
Tim Reardon, regional vice-president of Western Canada for Marriott International, offered a broader view: "This is a district that has transformed itself into a lifestyle destination all on its own."
Moxy Calgary East Village is expected to complete in 2028. The Rivers District also includes other hotel projects underway: Truman and Marriott International's Autograph Collection Hotel on Stampede Park, and W Hotel and JW Marriott Hotels & Residences in The Culture + Entertainment District.
