Neo Financial Technologies is laying off 102 employees—about a tenth of its roughly 1,000-person workforce—to streamline operations after years of explosive growth.
The Calgary-based challenger bank, founded in 2019, announced the cuts across "nearly every part" of the business Tuesday via LinkedIn. CEO and co-founder Andrew Chau described it as "the hardest day" the company has had.
"Building almost everything at once meant complexity crept in and everything moved slower," Chau wrote in a note to employees. "To execute on this, we're going to operate as a simpler and faster team. We're going to build fewer things faster."
The layoffs come after a remarkable growth trajectory. Neo raised nearly $70 million from Canadian investors and institutions in February—more than four times what the company anticipated. The firm hit a three-year revenue growth rate of nearly 1,300 per cent and topped Deloitte's 2025 Technology Fast 50 list.
Neo competes with Canada's major banks by offering low or no-fee online financial services, including savings accounts and mortgages.
