Man charged with robbery and assault after attempted carjackings in northeast Calgary Thursday

A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged after two attempted carjackings and assaults in northeast Calgary Thursday afternoon.
Amine Ayman Abdelli approached the first motorist around 12:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Martinvalley Crescent N.E. and demanded the vehicle. When the person refused, Abdelli assaulted them with bolt cutters, causing serious injuries. The victim was transported to hospital and later upgraded to stable condition.
Abdelli then attempted to steal a second motorist's vehicle, assaulting that person as well. The second victim sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.
Police apprehended Abdelli shortly after. The suspect was taken to hospital after suffering a medical episode.
Abdelli was charged with two counts of robbery, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, breach of a release order, possession of methamphetamine, and disguise with intent—eight offences in total.
Abdelli is scheduled to appear in court October 15.
