Calgary's Operation Silent Night enforcement initiative on 17 Avenue SW measurably reduced excessive vehicle noise during August 2026 compared to August 2025, according to data from a noise monitor near Tomkins Park.

During enforcement hours in August, loud vehicle events dropped to 267 from 357 the previous year—a 25.2 percent reduction. Across the full analysis period (including non-enforcement hours), events fell to 715 from 801, a 10.7 percent decrease.

Sound levels also fell. Average noise during enforcement hours was 68.80 dBA in August 2026, down from 71.18 dBA in August 2025—a drop of 2.38 decibels. The city operates a citywide noise-monitoring network and found the strongest reductions during active enforcement periods.

Brad Johnson, inspector and head of the City's Traffic Safety Team, attributed the results to visible enforcement. "The results show that when drivers understand the rules and see a visible enforcement presence, we can make a meaningful difference in reducing excessive vehicle noise and improving the quality of life for residents and businesses," Johnson said.

The enforcement push followed months of complaints about noise on the Red Mile. An earlier assessment in late August suggested the crackdown was showing no measurable effect at that point, but the full August comparison now shows clear results when the month is measured against 2025.

The city has not announced when the next review will occur or whether Operation Silent Night will continue into the fall.
