Low oxygen levels forced rescuers to abandon search tunnel for 11-year-old Parker

As Calgary continues to grieve the death of 11-year-old Parker, details have emerged about the life-threatening conditions rescuers faced while searching the tunnel system where his body was found.
Three Calgary Fire Department specialty teams — aquatic, technical rescue, and hazardous material — were deployed Wednesday to recover Parker from the labyrinth of pipes running beneath Deerfoot Trail. The tunnels started at less than three metres in diameter and narrowed to an estimated 1.3 metres.
Crew monitors detected an ambient oxygen level of 19 per cent as they ventured deeper into the system. "As you get below 19 per cent, that could be insufficient oxygen levels for a person to breathe," said CFD spokesman Alex Kwan. "Our team hit those conditions, and we exited back and then made a plan to go to the other side and search the tunnels."
Parker's body was later found and retrieved through an access point on the west side of Deerfoot Trail. As HighOnCity reported in July, the 11-year-old had been missing since July 16 after leaving his day home in Cambrian Heights. Police confirmed the recovered body was Parker on Thursday.
The CFD response was substantial: 31 members responded, more than two-thirds of the specialized personnel on active duty that day. The technical rescue team dedicated one of its two stations to the search while maintaining response capability for other emergency calls.
First responders involved in the recovery are being encouraged to seek support. Battalion Chief Bruce Barr noted the Calgary Fire Department has two main mental and physical health support systems for members, and he has seen increased use in his 30 years with the service. "It's a tough time for everybody," Barr said. "We're all a bit sad today."
A vigil honouring Parker's memory is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3 at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas United Church in Hawkwood. The family has also organized an online fundraiser to help with funeral, memorial, travel, lost income, and counselling expenses.
