Parts of Alberta skipped fall and went straight to winter as late August snow arrived in high-altitude mountainous areas Sunday morning.
The snow remained confined to peaks and ridges, steering clear of major cities. The Nakiska Ridgetop weather station recorded a low of -0.1°C with a windchill of -6°C as of Sunday afternoon. Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts from that station, such as those for Kananaskis Village, indicated the snow level would rise from 2,200 metres to 2,700 metres through the afternoon.
Ski hills in the mountains captured the early arrival. Live webcams from Banff Sunshine Village and Lake Louise both showed winter landscapes, with Banff Sunshine posting on Facebook: "Hello WINTER! Mother Nature is getting excited for the return of the ski and snowboard season."
Looking ahead to winter, early forecasts predict mixed conditions for Alberta. OpenSnow, a U.S.-based forecast service, is calling for above-normal temperatures for much of the province, including Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat. The Farmers' Almanac Canada winter forecast for 2026–2027 is predicting a season of dramatic contrasts.
