Union files grievance with Sobeys over Alberta flag displays in stores

The United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 401, which represents approximately 32,000 members across Alberta, has filed a grievance against Sobeys over the display of Alberta flags in some of the chain's stores.

The union claims the Alberta flag can now be considered a separatist movement symbol and says Sobeys "has recklessly and inappropriately presented Alberta flags in its retail stores." The union alleges that Sobeys decision-makers from Ontario chose to hoist the flags despite awareness of the separation movement controversy.

Sobeys has stated the flags are meant to promote local products, but the UFCW argues the signage and rollout are inconsistent and problematic. "Why would Sobeys wade into this controversial topic?" the union asked in an online post, adding that online customer commentary shows shoppers are becoming angry at the displays and warning that the company is "threatening their business by betting on a losing cause."

The union returned to the bargaining table with the company last week and is hopeful a settlement can be reached before September. However, they are tentatively planning a strike vote for the second week of September.

A similar protest occurred in 2025 when a Safeway store in Medicine Hat displayed an Alberta flag, with some community members voicing concerns about the flag being politicized. At that time, parent company Sobeys said no ill intent or political statement was intended; the operation was showcasing local products.
