A driver was caught speeding to 195 km/h on Highway 2 near Okotoks after a Foothills Enforcement officer spotted the vehicle doing an estimated 150 km/h in a 110 km/h zone.

The officer was merging onto Highway 2 from Highway 2A, travelling south, when the speeding vehicle was noticed. As the officer moved to catch up, the driver accelerated to 178 km/h, a speed confirmed by radar. The vehicle continued accelerating through heavy traffic, reaching a maximum of 195 km/h.

The driver was issued an automatic court appearance where a judge will determine the penalty, along with a $243 fine for failing to produce registration.

"At speeds like these, there is little room for error and the consequences can be devastating," Foothills Enforcement said in a statement about the incident.
