A 17-year-old former student is facing attempted murder charges after attacking another student with a knife Thursday at Lester B. Pearson High School in northeast Calgary.

Police arrived at the school, located at 52 Street NE near Village Square Leisure Centre, just after noon. Officers found the suspect smashing property and threatening students and staff before he attempted to stab another student. The school was placed on lockdown immediately.

One student sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalization. Police arrested the suspect within minutes of arriving at the scene. Investigators believe the attack was premeditated and targeted specific individuals.

The 17-year-old cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He's been charged with attempted murder, uttering threats, and mischief to property under $5,000. His next court appearance is June 24.

"Our officers responded within minutes and acted decisively to ensure the safety of every student and staff member," said Calgary Police Service Staff Sgt. Mike Sushelnitsky. "Incidents like this highlight just how important lockdown drills are. The preparedness of students and staff may well have saved lives."

The Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Police Service are offering support and resources to students and staff. The police's Victim Assistance Support Team (VAST) is available at 403-428-8398 for anyone needing help.
