Eleven freight cars plunged into the Priddis Slough after a Canadian Pacific Kansas City train derailed near Sheriff King Street S.W. on Monday morning around 7:45 a.m.
According to Calgary Fire Department public information officer Alex Kwan, 13 cars left the tracks, with 11 ending up partially submerged in the wetland. A hazardous materials team worked with CPKC officials to identify the contents of the derailed cars.
Construction materials were visible floating in the water, but packaging used to transport products is designed to keep materials contained. "We have nothing to indicate that there is any gas spillage or any liquids," Kwan said. "There is no imminent danger to the public at all."
A technical rescue team was deployed but later released from the scene. The derailment occurred away from major roadways, so traffic was unaffected, though response efforts were complicated by limited access along the waterside. No injuries were reported. The cause remains under investigation.
