A Canadian Pacific Kansas City freight train derailed into the Priddis Slough waterway in southwest Calgary early Monday morning, sending 13 cars carrying mixed cargo into the pond.
Emergency crews were called to the 17000 block of Sheriff King Street SW around 7:45 a.m. The train cars were carrying lumber, plywood, propane, and argon.
A CPKC railway spokesperson said there is no indication of leakage from the tanker cars at this time, and the crew aboard the train was not injured. Calgary Fire Department public information officer Alex Kwan confirmed that "all products appeared to be contained" and there are "no imminent concerns to the public at this time."
Aerial footage from Calgary police confirmed 13 train cars are involved in the derailment. Cleanup and investigation are underway, with Calgary emergency officials and CPKC crew members remaining on-site.
Traffic disruptions that occurred near Shawville Gate SW earlier in the day have cleared. Apart from brief closures at the intersection of Sheriff King Street SW and Silverado Boulevard SW, main roadways remain unaffected.
