Virtual MD expands pediatric services through Health Link
Alberta's Virtual MD program adds eight pediatricians to boost children's healthcare access via 811 phone service.
Alberta's Virtual MD program is expanding to reach more children and newborns, adding eight pediatricians to the service that connects patients with doctors by phone through Health Link's 811 line.
Since launching in 2022, Virtual MD has helped more than 150,000 Albertans — many without a family doctor — access care without visiting an emergency room. When patients call 811, they're triaged by a nurse and can be referred to a Virtual MD physician if appropriate, reducing strain on hospitals while speeding up non-emergency consultations.
The pediatric expansion signals Alberta's push to keep children out of overcrowded ERs for routine health concerns. Parents can now consult specialists without booking appointments weeks in advance. The service remains free to callers, part of the province's broader effort to ease pressure on primary care and emergency services.
