A woman has died following an officer-involved shooting on Deerfoot Trail near Memorial Drive on Sunday afternoon, June 21.
Calgary police were called shortly after 4 p.m. for multiple reports of an erratic driver. Officers said the vehicle was involved in multiple collisions downtown, was seen travelling the wrong direction on one-way streets, and ran red lights at high speed. Police located the vehicle between Memorial Drive and 16th Avenue N.
Inspector Mike Anderson said a confrontation occurred as officers worked to take the driver into custody. Multiple officers used various force tools, and one officer discharged their service firearm. The driver was later pronounced dead.
Anderson noted the woman had been driving erratically while fleeing police over the previous 24 hours, and that RCMP had also been aware of her prior to the incident.
No officers were injured. Road closures in the area remained in effect for several hours overnight. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, the province's independent police watchdog, is investigating the shooting.
