Things to do in Calgary this week: September 27 – October 3

This week splits cleanly: sunny and cool through Tuesday, then rain pushes in Wednesday and lingers into the weekend. That means your outdoor time lives early, and your indoor cultural moves land when the weather turns. It's an old-school setup that asks you to be strategic.

Start Sunday with The Story of Linda Ronstadt at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.—a career-spanning retrospective of one of rock's most influential voices, her range spanning country, rock, and Latin styles across five decades. It's the kind of show that doesn't tour often, and the Dome's acoustics are built for it. Grab dinner beforehand at CHARCUT, the Red Mile steak house where you can settle into a proper meal before heading downtown.

Monday stays clear and mild enough for a walk, and Big Thief plays the Jubilee at 7 p.m. The Brooklyn indie folk band formed in 2015 around vocalist Adrianne Lenker's songwriting and the interplay between guitarists Lenker and Buck Meek—their live sets are sparse and intense, the kind of performance that rewards close attention. If you're going, Gogi Korean Kitchen in Bridgeland is a quick, solid pre-show stop.

Tuesday is your last genuinely dry day. The rest of the week turns overcast and wet, with Wednesday bringing rain showers and Thursday-Friday staying cool and damp. This is when the Palace Theatre becomes your friend. Enter Shikari—the English rock band formed in St Albans in 1999—plays the Palace Wednesday at 8 p.m. for $51 and up. Default takes the Grey Eagle Event Centre the same night. Both are solid indoor bets when the weather closes in.

Thursday night, the Palace hosts Kybba, an Amsterdam-based DJ working in dancehall and urban styles, at 9 p.m. (18+). Friday brings LØLØ—the touring version of God Forbid's metalcore and melodic death metal—to Commonwealth Bar at 6 p.m., followed by oskar med k, the Norwegian electronic producer, at the Palace at 9 p.m. If you're out both nights, Vintage Chophouse and Tavern holds up well as a warm anchoring meal between gigs.

Sunday comedy also lands: Trent McClellan, a Newfoundland-born stand-up who's been Calgary-based since 2004, plays the Laugh Shop at 6 p.m., while Jimmy Carr—the British comedian who began his career in 1997—takes the Saddledome at 7:30 p.m. The Carr show is the bigger draw and the larger room.

Beyond the stages, this is a week for new food landing on the map. Over The Top Pop Shop, the Airdrie-based soda and snacks chain, opens its first Calgary location on Crowfoot this week with customizable drinks and ice cream. Dnipro Village in McKenzie Towne serves modern Ukrainian home cooking—handmade pierogi, borscht, cabbage rolls—in an upscale but unfussy setting. And iQ Food Co debuts at the Core downtown with California-style pizza, part of a wider expansion across the city's restaurant scene.
