Hundreds of customers turned out Tuesday when Hazeldean Bakery reopened its doors after sitting dark for a year.
The south Edmonton bakery, a neighbourhood fixture since the 1970s, had closed when longtime owner Lucy Lu retired in 2025 after 16 years running the place. New owner Luke Wood, who moved to Edmonton from Yellowknife, is taking over with a co-owner who works in the baking industry. Lu is staying for at least another month to train the new team on recipes and operations.
"It's great to be open, the community's been waiting and we've been waiting, but we're open now and it's fantastic," Wood said Edmonton. "The community has been very supportive, so I'm pretty sure it will work out," he added.
Regular customer Colin Kot said he's been coming since Lu's tenure began. "The product is good, it's affordable, and Lucy's just an all-around nice person," Kot said. "This is something needed in the community. I mean, you don't get better baked goods than Lucy's bakery."
Neighbour Tove Hannell, who moved to the area from Sweden, was among those celebrating the reopening. "We've been glancing at this place and wondering 'when is it gonna open?' so I'm very happy today," Hannell said.
Lu, now in British Columbia, has transitioned out of the business she built. "Very, very relaxed," she said of retirement. "I have the time to learn how to plant flowers in the garden."
