Barrel Fest returns to Ritchie Park on Sept. 12 with barrel-aged brews from Edmonton and abroad

Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company transforms Ritchie Park into an outdoor tasting room on September 12 for Barrel Fest, the fourth annual celebration of barrel-aged and barrel-fermented beers.

The festival showcases spontaneous beer—a Belgian-rooted style that ferments wild, tasting closer to champagne or sparkling wine than traditional beer. Blind Enthusiasm owner Greg Zeschuk, who co-founded video game studio BioWare before starting the brewery in 2018, calls it a chance to educate drinkers about the style's complexity. "When we do a store tasting, people will try our beer and go, 'Wow, that's not anything like I expected," Zeschuk said.

Alberta brewers Blindman Brewing, Sea Change Brewing, and Campio Brewing Company join Blind Enthusiasm in pouring, alongside international makers: Fierce Beer from Aberdeen, Scotland and Cantillon from Brussels. The brewery's three-story concrete building on Happy Beer Street, just off 99 Street south of Whyte Avenue, was custom-built for spontaneous fermentation. Since opening in 2018, Blind Enthusiasm has brewed nearly 300 batches while seeing taproom sales grow 20 to 30 per cent annually—a climb in a neighbourhood with 11 other breweries competing for volume.

Head brewer Doug Checknita, who worked in Quebec and Europe before returning to Edmonton with Zeschuk to launch the brewery, has devoted himself to a niche within a niche. "People don't know what we are, don't know what we do," Checknita said. "We're a niche type of beer in a niche beer industry." Barrel Fest is where that work gets tasted.
