The Edmonton Valley Zoo hosts the festival for three nights this summer, with beer, food trucks, and animal talks.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo is transforming into a beer garden this summer. Zoo Brew — one of the zoo's biggest yearly events — returns for its ninth year, bringing more than 25 breweries to the grounds over three nights.

Started in 2017 as an initiative aimed at younger supporters, Zoo Brew has become an anticipated annual event. Visitors explore both the zoo's animal habitats and drink options simultaneously, exchanging tickets for beer, vodka, gin, whisky, and other spirits. Food trucks set up in open spaces — like near the reindeer habitat — to keep hungry attendees fed.

The event is a fundraiser with a purpose: all proceeds go toward Project Carnivora, the Valley Zoo's refurbishment of its snow leopard and Canadian lynx habitats. Attendees will see the habitats under construction this year — positioned right near the zoo's entrance, so the big cats will be the first animals visitors encounter when complete.

What's new this year: the zoo is undertaking an Aspen Parkland reforestation project, which means the amphitheatre can't be used for musical entertainment like in past years. Instead, the zoo is trying street-style performers — acoustic musicians by the urban farm and pandas, singers and guitarists scattered throughout the grounds.

Animal talks are back and remain a fan favourite. Zookeepers share facts about furry and scaly residents during activities like otter feedings or meerkat beer pong (don't worry, the Red Solo Cups are filled with meerkat-appropriate food).

Edmonton-based breweries and distilleries are on board. Some larger operations donate 100 per cent of their profits to the zoo, while smaller outfits split proceeds or have other arrangements. The valley zoo is grateful for the support and works with partners however they can.

It's the perfect evening for beer lovers and animal lovers alike.
