Tragically Hip guitarist Paul Langlois is bringing his solo work and decades of Canadian rock credibility to Rockin' Thunder this Sunday at Northlands Racetrack.
Langlois takes the 4 p.m. slot on the final day of the festival with his new Kingston-based band, performing material from his latest album Smooth Rock Falls alongside some Hip classics. The album is wistful and angsty — a solid entry in his long solo catalog that he finished somewhat by desperation, he said in a recent interview.
"I'm not a natural workaholic songwriter, more kind of a last-minute, desperate kind of songwriter, and the guys, my band — this is the second one we've done together — are all really quick on their feet," Langlois said. He assembled the band four years after the Hip's final show in 2016, pulling together four Kingston musicians who have his back and love playing.
Langlois leans toward big summer festivals and avoids smaller ticketed shows — he said the pressure of watching the house fill is a mental hurdle. The Rockin' Thunder lineup also features Three Days Grace and Creed.
