Fort Saskatchewan RCMP are warning residents of a text message scam impersonating Alberta Registry Services and claiming unpaid traffic or parking violations.
The fraudulent messages direct recipients to click a link and submit payment, threatening additional charges and impacts to driver's licence or vehicle registration if the supposed fine goes unpaid. The tactic uses fear and urgency to pressure quick action.
Residents should not open or click links in unsolicited text messages and should never share personal, banking, or identification details through such messages. Legitimate government agencies do not request sensitive information via unsolicited texts with payment links.
If you interact with a suspicious link or provide information, contact your financial institution immediately. Report the incident to your local police service and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm or 1-888-495-8501.
