Maysa Ferguson has been awarded the Leduc Minor Hockey Association's $1,000 2026 scholarship for demonstrating exemplary character and making significant contributions to the LMHA, the sport of hockey, and the community.
Ferguson first joined Leduc Minor Hockey in 2015, playing co-ed novice before joining the female program in 2017. She became a leader on several teams and began coaching in 2025, serving as a junior coach for the LMHA U11 Tier 3 Female Roughnecks, helping the team win the Minor Hockey Week gold medal.
The scholarship will support Ferguson's attendance at Red Deer Polytechnic starting this September, where she is majoring in biology with hopes of becoming a biology teacher and coaching hockey.
"I know that this experience has reinforced my goal of becoming a teacher, and I hope to be able to continue giving back as a coach in the future," Ferguson said.
Beyond hockey, Ferguson's achievements extend widely. She volunteered on the Student Grad Council, tutored students in math, biology, and social studies, and achieved a 4.0 GPA in Grade 12.
Reflecting on her time with LMHA, Ferguson said: "I may soon forget whether the games were won or lost, but I will always remember the lessons I learned, the many teammates I played alongside, and the lifelong friendships I've made throughout the 11 seasons that I was proud to be a Roughneck. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and am committed to making the most of it academically."
Ferguson was selected from a field of seven applicants. For more on the LMHA Scholarship, visit lmha.ab.ca or email scholarship@lmha.ab.ca.
