Leduc RCMP launches drone program for search, crime scenes, and barricaded suspects

The Leduc RCMP Detachment has officially launched a new Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) program designed to enhance situational awareness during critical incidents across Leduc, Calmar, and the Edmonton International Airport.
Inspector Kiel Samotej, Officer in Charge of the Leduc and YEG Detachments, said the technology allows officers to gather timely and accurate information while reducing risk to both the public and responding personnel. The program will deploy drones for search and rescue operations, collision and crime scene documentation, and disaster response.
Since its recent introduction, the RPAS program has already proven its operational value. It assisted Leduc County in containing a residence involving a barricaded suspect in crisis—the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. The system also responded to a report of individuals shooting firearms in a field in Leduc, with General Duty officers on scene; no suspects were located. In another deployment, the RPAS successfully attended a stolen-vehicle scene in a farmer's field in Leduc, confirming there were no occupants hiding inside.
The RCMP emphasized that all RPAS deployments will comply strictly with applicable legislation, Transport Canada regulations, and RCMP policy. The program is underpinned by a strong commitment to protecting public privacy and rights.
