Woman pleads guilty to impaired driving that killed two Leduc County residents in April 2025 crash

Family members of two Alberta residents killed in a 2025 impaired-driving crash wept Thursday as the driver behind the collision pleaded guilty to their deaths.

A head-on collision occurred on Highway 21 at Township Road 502 in Leduc County. Kean Konchinew, a resident of Camrose, and his mother Shirley were killed. Loved ones traveled from across Alberta and Saskatchewan to attend the court proceeding.

Amy Patricia Krautt, 39, entered the courtroom using a walker and pleaded guilty to two counts of impaired driving causing death. Court heard that Krautt's blood alcohol level, drawn five hours after the crash, measured between 329 and 381 milligrams of ethyl alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood—more than four times the legal limit.

Kean's four daughters are now fatherless. Shirley and her husband Lawrence had been married 53 years. "It's so awful to live without a wife, to live without a son," Lawrence told the court.

Krautt was also severely injured in the crash, suffering an almost-severed foot and brain damage. "Those are self-inflicted," Kean's sister Kellie said. "You got behind the car, you got behind the wheel. You chose."

This was not Krautt's first incident. In 2019, she was caught using her phone while driving and drinking; she pleaded guilty to common nuisance charges in that case.

Crosses still lay along Highway 21 marking where the Konchinews' lives were cut short. Family members remembered Kean as genuinely positive—"like the sun," his sister Constance said—and Shirley as a teacher with much left to pass down to her children.

No sentencing date has been scheduled.
