Community leaders, employers, advocates, and residents gathered in Sherwood Park on October 6 to promote workplace inclusion and celebrate workers with disabilities as part of Disability Employment Awareness Month.
The annual DEAM Rally began at the Strathcona County Community Centre's Agora Room before participants took part in a community procession through Sherwood Park. Speakers included Buddy Winder, co-owner of Winder Inclusive Communities Service, and advocates Corey and Paula, who shared personal perspectives on the importance of creating inclusive workplaces.
Attendees included Mayor Rod Frank, MLA Kyle Kasawski, members of Strathcona County council, Strathcona County human resources representative Maggi Hudson, and a representative from MP Garnett Genuis's office. Mariane McDonaugh of Servus Credit Union was among inclusive employers playing a prominent role.
"The event centered on the profound truth that meaningful employment breaks down barriers, fosters true community inclusion, and sees people for their worth rather than limitations," said May Laufman, the event organizer. Throughout October, Frank, Kasawski, council members, and Hudson will each spend time job shadowing a Winder Inclusive Communities Service client.
"This initiative goes beyond simple advocacy, allowing community leaders to experience inclusive employment firsthand and help model the path forward for other local employers," Laufman wrote. The annual event promotes inclusive hiring practices and raises awareness of employment opportunities for people with disabilities across the region.
