Thousands of Albertans have turned to AI platforms to research the 10 referendum questions they'll vote on October 19, according to Google Trends data, with usage expected to surge further this week as advance voting continues.
Advance voting opened Tuesday and runs through Saturday, October 17. The referendum asks five questions about immigration policy, four about constitutional matters, and one about whether Alberta should initiate a binding referendum on leaving Canada.
Stephanie Husby, chair of science and technology at NorQuest College, says AI can be a useful tool for understanding the questions if used strategically. "I think that's what we're seeing in the Google Trends is people are using it, they are searching for it, and they're getting AI responses back," she said.
Husby cautioned that the first nine questions have drawn criticism from Albertans and experts for their complexity and length. She recommended asking AI to simplify the questions and provide general information on what voting yes or no would mean on each topic.
"AI isn't a search engine, and so it's important to actually engage with it more than that, and to give it more information," Husby said. She suggested using AI more conversationally — asking it to act like an expert or a fair-minded political opponent, and instructing it to challenge positions — rather than as a simple search tool. "It helps to ask for additional context as well, so ask it to act like an expert, ask it to act like a fair-minded political opponent. So using it more conversationally and less like a search engine will allow you to get more accurate information out of it, although all information coming out of AI should be verified."
Most AI tools provide links to supplement answers without prompting, which Husby said offers a simple way for users to verify information. She emphasized that voters should never treat AI output as final: all information from AI requires verification against official sources.
