Autopsy complete in death of three-year-old at 91 Street building
The cause remains undetermined pending toxicology; neighbors describe a unit wracked by violence, drug use, and instability.
An autopsy has been completed on a three-year-old girl found dead in a unit at 91 Street and Jasper Avenue on Saturday, though the Edmonton Medical Examiner's Office says the manner of death remains undetermined pending toxicology results.
The brownstone complex at the corner shows visible neglect—overgrown bushes and weeds greet visitors. A small figurine of a girl now stands at the gate, a makeshift memorial.
According to neighbors who spoke with Postmedia, the unit where the child lived was a site of constant turmoil. Drug use was prevalent; people came and went at all hours. Verbal confrontations and screaming were regular. One neighbor said she feared some of the people entering and exiting the apartment. She said multiple children lived there; one would regularly come to her for food and comfort, talking about not having enough to eat and always looking for candy. She witnessed someone arrive with two black eyes and saw the girl's grandmother bring food to the unit.
The neighbor's own door hangs loose after someone tried to kick it down demanding money for crack.
Edmonton Police confirmed the other children in the home were placed into family care. Children and Family Services were notified. Homicide continues to investigate.
