Edmonton's AA+ credit rating is holding steady, according to an assessment by S&P Global released Monday, with the ratings agency citing the city's "strong financial policies, transparent disclosure, and well-documented financial plans."

Mayor Andrew Knack praised the city administration's financial management, noting that the city finished last year in a surplus position despite expectations of a potential deficit. "That's the type of performance we've seen from this management team," he said. "It's nice to have that external validation."

While the S&P Global report acknowledges that Edmonton's debt is climbing as major capital projects like the Valley West LRT line near completion, it notes the city has strong liquidity and can access up to $500 million in additional credit if needed. The report also signals that debt is stabilizing as major projects wrap up and the focus shifts to renewal.

The ratings agency projects Edmonton's population growth will slow to 1.7 per cent this year due to decreased international migration, but expects the city's economic outlook to remain resilient amid broader national uncertainties. A caveat notes the city's operating budget will rely on population and property tax growth in the short term, though the administration is focused on ensuring the tax base remains sustainable long-term.

S&P Global noted the city is establishing renewal funds for neighbourhoods and alleyways. Knack said the next four-year budget, to be discussed by council this fall, will reflect the report's findings and emphasize infrastructure renewal over new major projects. "Realistically you're not going to see a lot of big new things — in fact you probably won't see any," he said.
