EIPS schools mark Pride Week with inclusive celebrations

Schools across Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) marked Pride Week from June 1 to 5 with voluntary, student-led activities designed to reinforce the division's commitment to inclusive and safe learning environments.
"Elk Island Public Schools is committed to fostering inclusive working and learning environments where students, staff and families of all gender identities and expressions feel welcome and safe," said EIPS Board Chair Colleen Holowaychuk. "Recognizing what makes each of us unique helps lay the foundation for meaningful learning opportunities."
Pride events varied by school and community. In Strathcona County, a flag-raising ceremony took place June 6. Vegreville hosted a Pride BBQ on June 3. Fort Saskatchewan is planning events for June 12–18. All activities are age and grade-appropriate, happening outside of instructional time, and voluntary for both students and staff.
EIPS Director of Supports for Students Marcus Reed emphasized the division's broader mission: "Each student, staff member, family and community partner brings unique experiences, perspectives and strengths. By recognizing our differences and celebrating the strengths we share, we help every learner feel valued, supported and ready to learn."
The Pride Week initiative reflects EIPS's ongoing effort to create spaces where diversity is celebrated and every student feels they belong — a message the division says is increasingly important in its diverse communities.
