Filmmaker Georgina Lightning dies after incident at Enoch Indian Relay event
The first North American Indigenous woman to direct a major feature film was struck by a horse at the Enoch Rodeo Grounds on Friday evening.

Georgina Lightning, a member of Samson Cree Nation and the first North American Indigenous woman to direct a major feature film, died at age 63 after an incident at an Indian Relay event at the Enoch Rodeo Grounds on Friday evening.
RCMP were called to Enoch Park Race Track shortly after 6:30 p.m. Friday. Lightning was standing in the media area when a horse left the track and struck her. Emergency medical services pronounced her dead before police arrived. Occupational Health and Safety is conducting an investigation with RCMP support; the investigation remains ongoing.
Lightning directed Older Than America, Johnny Greyeyes, and DreamKeeper. Three projects are pending release: Watcher (a made-for-TV movie in which she acted), A Life Less Empty (a film as actress), and Fantasies of Flying (as executive producer). She co-founded Tribal Alliance Productions, which supports Indigenous storytellers in all forms of media production, and helped establish the Native Media Network, which assists First Nation artists in establishing themselves in film and media industries. Lightning was awarded the White House Project's Epic Award for Emerging Artist in 2010, appeared on The West Wing and Walker: Texas Ranger, and provided vocal talents to Disney's Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World and the video game What's My Story?
Indian Relay is a high-speed race where athletes switch horses at full gallop after each lap around a track, typically without a saddle. The sport is rooted in traditional bison hunting and warrior training.
Enoch Cree Nation released a statement Saturday: "Chief and council extend our most sincere condolences to the family. Our community is grieving, and we are holding them in our thoughts and prayers. The nation is working with the appropriate authorities as they conduct their investigation, and we will support that process fully. Out of respect, we will not be speculating on the circumstances."
Lightning's daughter, Crystle Lightning, announced the death in a social media post Saturday night: "Today, she made her way to the spirit world and I am still in shock. I have lost my mother, my son's Kokhum, my matriarch, my role model, my confident. That's all I can say right now. I'm wrecked."
