An Alberta coal mining company has been fined $360,000 after pleading guilty to failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Prairie Mines and Royalty ULC, an Edmonton-based company, was charged following the death of a worker on November 25, 2023, near Warburg, Alberta, southwest of Edmonton. The worker was fatally injured while clearing water and ice from piping when an ice plug became dislodged and struck him.

The Crown withdrew 11 other charges against the company. The Alberta government designated the $360,000 fine as a creative sentence, directing the funds to the Alberta Mine Safety Association to develop best practices and training for water removal operations.
