A school bus carrying 49 students and seven adults from St. Matthew Catholic Elementary School crashed into a ditch on Yellowhead Trail northeast of downtown Edmonton on Friday, June 12, after experiencing a tire blowout.

Four elementary students were taken to hospital for precautionary reasons. A Cunningham Transport spokesperson said despite being "shaken up," all passengers have been checked over by EMS and appear to be doing okay. The school division confirmed all students and staff are safe.

Emergency crews including police, paramedics, and fire responded to the scene. A replacement bus transported the remaining students back to the school, and worried parents and guardians arrived to collect their children.

The incident highlights the unpredictable nature of field trip logistics — one mechanical failure rippled across 56 people's afternoon.
