Servus Edmonton Marathon closes downtown streets Sunday; expect transit delays and parking impacts

Downtown Edmonton shuts down August 17, for the 35th Servus Edmonton Marathon, with full road closures on Jasper Avenue and transit detours affecting 11 routes as 15,000 spectators and 400 volunteers flood the streets for races ranging from 1K to the full 42.2-kilometre marathon.
Starting at 6 a.m., Jasper Avenue will be fully closed from 95 Street to 116 Street until 4 p.m., with drivers instructed to use 104 Avenue or 107 Avenue as alternates. An additional closure of Jasper Avenue from 99 Street to 96 Street, and 97 Street from Jasper to 101A Avenue, continues until 10 p.m. The city strongly encourages drivers to avoid the marathon course entirely rather than attempting to cross it.
Residents in Cromdale, Virginia Park, Bellevue, Boyle Street, Highlands, Beverly Heights, Rundle Heights, Wîhkwêntôwin, Glenora, Crestwood and Parkview will still be able to access their homes but should expect delays and are asked not to park on neighbourhood streets during the event.
Parking facilities impacted until 4 p.m. include Canada Place East and West parkades, Stanley A. Milner Library parkade, Sun Life parkade, KRP Tower, Diamond and Impark lots on 99 Street south of Jasper, the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald, DoubleTree by Hilton Downtown, and surface lots along 101A Avenue between 96 and 97 streets.
Edmonton Transit Service routes 101, 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 110X, 511, 701, 900X, 901 and 902 will be detoured or have closed stops. Route 101 is affected between 5 and 10:30 a.m., while the remaining 11 routes face disruptions from 5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Routes 2, 5, 111 and 900X have additional detours between 4 and 11 p.m. for setup and teardown.
The event features five races: the full marathon, Healthcare Solutions Half Marathon, Complete Shipping Solutions Army 10K, Flair Airlines Family 5K Fun Run and the Westburne 1K Kids Run, with more than $20,000 in prize money. Last year's event raised $80,000 for local charities. The event runs from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Race director Tom Keogh said the marathon is "about more than crossing the finish line. It's about cheering each other on, supporting local charities and showcasing Edmonton at its very best."
