Two boys, 11 and 12 years old, were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after their electric dirt bike was struck by a Ford Fusion at the intersection of Windermere Boulevard and Terwillegar Drive in southwest Edmonton on Thursday, September 10, around 2:30 p.m.
The 11-year-old was operating the dirt bike with the 12-year-old as a passenger. The bike was in the far left turning lane on Windermere Boulevard eastbound when it went straight through an advance left-turn signal, cutting off the Ford Fusion in a neighbouring turning lane. The Fusion struck the dirt bike. The Ford's driver remained on scene and was uninjured. Edmonton police's major collisions investigation section was called in.
Edmonton police said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing; the identities of the injured children and any charges or citations have not been released.
This collision follows earlier incidents involving young riders in the city. As HighOnCity reported in July, a 15-year-old cyclist was struck in a hit-and-run in southwest Edmonton, and in August, a 10-year-old was hit by an e-scooter in south Edmonton.
Were any citations or charges issued to the 11-year-old operator or the Ford Fusion driver?
