Appearing in court as a witness—especially for a child who has experienced trauma—can be deeply stressful. The Zebra Child and Youth Advocacy Centre in Edmonton is expanding its approach to easing that burden with Nitro, a new addition to its 'buddy dog' program.

Nitro was introduced to supporters at a fundraiser on May 24, where a crowd of 200 gathered to meet the latest recruit. The program pairs specially trained dogs with children navigating the court system, offering a calming presence during testimony and other legal proceedings.

Research has shown that therapy dogs reduce anxiety and help children communicate more effectively in high-stress situations. For kids dealing with abuse, neglect, or trauma, the presence of a calm, nonjudgmental animal can be the difference between silence and the courage to speak.

The Zebra Centre serves Edmonton's most vulnerable young people, offering child-friendly spaces and advocacy support alongside traditional legal processes. Nitro's arrival signals the organization's commitment to trauma-informed care and to making the court experience less frightening for kids who've already endured too much.

Every addition to the team moves the dial on healing.
