Zebra Centre welcomes Nitro, latest trauma-support dog
New canine recruit helps children through court appearances and trauma recovery.
The Zebra Child and Youth Advocacy Centre has added Nitro to its team of therapeutic dogs — animals trained to support traumatized children during court appearances and recovery sessions.
Appearing in court, even as a witness, can be overwhelming for young people who've experienced abuse or trauma. Nitro's role is to provide calm, non-judgmental companionship during these vulnerable moments. The dog was introduced to supporters at a fundraiser on May 24, where roughly 200 people gathered to celebrate the centre's work.
Therapeutic dogs at the Zebra Centre have become central to the organization's approach. The animals help reduce anxiety, create safer emotional space, and give children a point of connection during proceedings that might otherwise feel alienating or frightening.
Nitro joins an established buddy-dog program that has demonstrated measurable benefits for the children the centre serves.
