Things to do in Edmonton this week: September 20–26

This is a week that splits clean in two: Sunday and Monday sit warm and clear, perfect for getting out; Wednesday onward, the weather turns cool and damp, pushing you indoors where the real action is anyway. A Broadway touring production, a major stand-up comic, and a Finnish metal band anchor a solid stretch that rewards planning.

Start the week outdoors if you can. Sunday hits 22 degrees under overcast skies—ideal for catching the Calgary Hitmen at the Edmonton Oil Kings at Rogers Place at 4 p.m., a WHL matchup that draws a real crowd and costs far less than an NHL ticket. If junior hockey does not move you, Monday climbs to 26 degrees and stays dry; that is your last clear, warm day before the system rolls in Wednesday.

The headliner this week is & Juliet, the Broadway touring production that transforms the Shakespeare plot you thought you knew into a musical powered by pop hits. It runs six nights—September 22 through 26—at the Jube, and if you have not locked in tickets, book now. This is the kind of touring show that sells out fast and does not stick around.

Tuesday brings Ensiferum to the Starlite Room at 6:30 p.m. The Finnish folk metal band labels themselves melodic folk metal, a specific and earned tag—they are not a novelty. If metal with a folk spine interests you, this is a rare Edmonton appearance. The same night, if you want something lighter, & Juliet continues at the Jube.

Comedy lands Thursday and Friday. Josh Thomas plays the Myer Horowitz Theatre at 7 p.m. Thursday; Josh Wolf runs a five-show stand at Rick Bronson's the Comic Strip September 24–26. Friday, Jimmy Carr—a British and Irish comedian who has been working stand-up since 1997—comes to Rogers Place at 8 p.m. Carr is arena-level funny and arena-sized in draw; this is the week's second-biggest ticket.

Weather turns on Wednesday: overcast, 18 degrees max, and 33 per cent rain. By Friday, you are looking at light drizzle and highs of 12 degrees. This is the week to eat inside. Hell's Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay opened Monday at River Cree Resort and Casino in Enoch (about 14 kilometres from downtown), and while opening weekend is fully booked, reservations are still available for the coming weeks if you want to plan ahead. For this week itself, head to Bianco for pizza—a warm room, good focus—or grab ramen at JINYA on a drizzly night. The Commodore, a solid diner, works anytime.

Beyond the stage, Yves plant-based products are returning to Canadian grocery shelves after discontinuation, a reversal worth noting if you cook plant-forward at home. Downtown is getting a celestial-themed park at 103 Street and 100 Avenue (construction begins spring 2027), a gathering space with Indigenous-inspired design that signals real thought going into public space. These are small wins but real ones.

If you have a single night to spend this week, Friday—Jimmy Carr at Rogers Place—is the call: major comic, major venue, and exactly the night you will want to be indoors anyway as the drizzle settles in.
